My Side of the Trail

October wrapped up with my last fall market of the season at the Vail Village Handmade Expo. Huge thank-you to everyone who came by, browsed, chatted, or took home art—your support means everything as I head into the holiday rush.

I've been able to spend the last few weeks taking more personal time as I transition between market seasons. A few friends and I went canyoneering in North Wash outside of Hanksville, Utah. We did two canyons…and spent the rest of the time hanging out in the rain. Not exactly the trip we planned, but still a fun, muddy, cozy-in-the-car kind of weekend.

At home, I’ve been leaning into the cozy kitchen season:

  • I made a spiced carrot cake with hand-grated carrots from my garden—my first cake ever!

  • And a creamy bean-based butternut squash soup that will definitely be sticking around all winter.

The chickens are doing great and enjoyed every veggie scrap the garden had to offer as I prepped it for winter. They’re currently molting and looking extra scruffy (not their most glamorous season), but spirits—and appetites—are still high.

For Halloween, I got to do some face painting for the kiddos at the Breckenridge Library, which was a blast. And Otis of course was was a Halloweenie, being the festive man he is to round out the month.
